Am I causing my baby tummy trouble?
My girl is EBF and almost 5 months old. I have noticed since she was first born (after we quit supplementing with formula but thats another story) that if I drink a lot of milk she has green poo. She even pooed on the changing table a few times and it was FOAMY when it came out :eek
I talked to her ped about this at her 2mo wic and he said it was fine and that I shouldn't stop the dairy and that the color of the poo didn't matter at all. I quit drinking milk for about 3 weeks though and her poo started changing to yellowish and it wasn't foamy anymore.
When I had a bit of milk it went back to green. She has always been a needy baby she dislikes being put down and she spits up a LOT.
My question is would it be beneficial to cut the dairy out of my diet? Is this really the problem? Since we are getting by ok with it does it even matter?
Thanks in advance!

I'd cut dairy and see if she's happier. It sure sounds like she's sensitve to it.

Yeah, it does sound like a dairy sensitivity. You might also want to check out this page:
Good luck, mama! :)

While my baby didn't have food color issues, he was and is sensitive to a bunch of stuff. Dairy was a big culprit and cutting it out helped with his gas issues and reflux/spitting up. I think it is DEFINITELY worth a try. But, be prepared to give it a good few weeks.
I actually did cut out dairy for a few weeks and saw no improvement but was convinced it was a good issue. We had an applied kinesiologist come in and confirm the dairy allergy, but she also found a wheat and nut sensitivity. Once I cut out all three he started to improve.
I tell you this not to scare you but to let you know it 1) might be more than dairy and 2) to encourage you to trust what you feel despite what the pediatrician says. If I didn't trust what I felt, my kiddo would still be having trouble and probably labled "colicky."
Oh, and the "being a needy baby" thing is familiar too. When Skye was going through all of this (and when he occasionally has an episode again) he becomes VERY needy and won't let me put him down...I have to walk him all over...I think it distracts them from the discomfort.
Hope this helps.

Definitely cut out dairy for a week or two and see if it improves.

Green, foamy poop is a frequent symptom of a dairy allergy. That it disappeared when you eliminated dairy just confirms that it's an issue. Too many pediatricians know nothing about allergies and, in their ignorance, can easily compound a problem. I would cut all dairy, even trace amounts, for at least a month. If there's improvement, assume there's an allergy.

Sounds like I will be cutting dairy too. Green, foamy, very watery at times poo sounds familiar. :( I *LIVE* on dairy. Milk in my cereal, grilled cheese for lunch, ice cream for dessert.... What am I going to eat? :p
Katelyn is not fussy or "needy" by any means, and doesn't seem to have a hindmilk/foremilk issue as per the LC - since she goes for anywhere from 5 min (straight sucking the whole time) to 20-25 min and "pops off" on her own when she is done...
My dh has a lactose sensitivity as well... Sounds like the little one inherited his digestive system.

Just wanted to point out that lactose intolerance in an infant is very rare. Very frequently, an allergy is brushed off as a sensitivity or intolerance. It's important to understand the difference because an allergy can be pretty significant and you don't want well-meaning relatives to offer a bit of this or a pinch of that--because it's only a tiny taste and what could it hurt? Sensitivities and intolerances aren't accepted with the same gravity. And then, using "sensitivity" and "allergy" interchangeably takes away some of the punch we need "allergy" to retain in order to keep our kids safe.

My son had terrible reactions to dairy. We found out through testing that is wasn't the lactose but the protein in the dairy he was allergic to. The protein in milk is almost identicle to the one in Wheat so some children can have problems with both. I wish I had known all this when he was an infant because I realize now that all his collic 41/2 mos worth, spitting up, and ear infections are common milk and or wheat allergies. Good luck.
