nipples hurting!
Both my nipples have been killing me lately when 16 m.o dd nurses! It takes my breath away when she latches on and then fades to a dull ache for the rest of the nursing session. She still only has 4 teeth, there is one that seems to be working its way down, but is still far from breaking through. Could it be teething? Is she clamping down and latching differently or is it thrush or something like that?]

Have you started your period yet? This was the first sign for me that my first period was on the way. Sure enough, about 2 weeks after the pain started (which lasted about 4-5 days) I got my first pp period. Just a thought.

I was just reading about late onset nipple pain in Jack Newman's "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers" last night. You might want to check it out. He suggests that the most common 3 reasons for nipple pain with an older baby are pregnancy, eczema of the nipples, and candida (yeast/thrush). I think that the hormonal changes just before your period can also cause soreness. Pregnancy will cause nipples to be sore and tender, and may also cause a drop in supply. Eczema will have a burning and sometimes itchy sensation. Candida will cause pain throughout the nursing session and often continues after the feeding is over. It will have a burning sensation (also sometimes described "crushed glass" in your breast below the nipple) and possibly radiate into your back or shoulder.
Newman offers suggestions for treatment to nipple pain in his book. I'd highly suggest getting a hold of a copy if your pain persists much longer! Feel better soon!
