Vaccines for Gulf Coast flood reconstruction

My thirteen year old is fully vaxed (things changed with the other two...). We were at the pediatrician today (she has strep throat) and mentioned that she would be going on a mission trip to the Gulf Coast for flood clean-up and reconstruction. We were advised that she should probably have a tetunus booster. She also recommended a meningitis vaccine, but went on to say that it wouldn't be helpful to her for this trip, but if she were going to continue going on mission trips it might be a good idea. The meningitis one is a no brainer right now - why bother if it wouldn't give her any protection now - but I'm wondering what you all think about a tetnus booster. I told the ped that I wasn't going to do anything at this time (especially if she does end up with strep and goes on antibiotics) and that I would research it. I have an awesome ped (she is the only one who has never rolled her eyes at me with regard to my baby girls selective/delayed vaccinations) so she didn't push at all, just "recommended" it.
So, wise women of MDC - what do you think?

I wouldn't do it. Tetanus has never been a threat to those with good circulation.

I wouldn't do it, either. If M does, by chance, get an an open wound, makes certain it bleeds clean. The O2 will kill any possible tetanus.

Remind me again that this vaccine is *not* necessary! She leaves on Saturday and everyone around me is saying that I should get it done. I'm a bit nervous sending her, and this is really starting to make me waver....I *know* it's not necessary in my head, but I'm doubting myself....UGH!

The only reason it's being recommended is because of the increased risk your daughter might get some sort of puncture wound or other serious wound, due to all the crap lying around and the fact that she'll be cleaning up and building. She's more likely to get tetanus only because she'll be more likely to get an injury in that situation, not because tetanus is more common on floodgrounds or anything. I don't know if that really makes a difference to you personally, because it still means the risk of tetanus is slightly higher under the circumstances. I just wasn't sure if perhaps you thought the risk was higher because of the flooding or the dirtiness or something. :o

:hug
She doesn't need it.

I think one thing mentioned is that boosters may not really be necessary and are probably just excessive. Since she's fully vaxed she might have immunity now without needing any boosters. There's also some discussion about it being rare with proper cleaning and sanitation. I guess I would ask, in the area she's going, will she have clean water and soap to wash any puncture wounds? here's the thread:

Does it make sense to inject her with the very disease your trying to prevent?
I think what would make her even more susceptible to any disease is the antibiotic use and vax thats filled with toxins. Hopefully, she will be on some good probiotics after abx? I'd fill her up with vit C, herbal immune boosters and work on an alkalining diet, and I think she would be good to go.

Stop telling people you daughters medical information/dilemas; what they don't know they can't nag you about. It is easier to ignore us if necessary :lol .

I remember when I got my tetanus booster before going to Europe when I was your DD's age. One of the things they told me was that it could cause my arm to be really swollen and sore so they gave it to me in my left arm since I'm right handed. How much fun would she have if her arm hurt like the dickens from a shot she just got? What if she had a reaction to the shot while she's gone and you're not there? If she got the shot today, would it really start to kick in and do any good by next week or while she's actually there? Is tetanus available on it's own for someone her age or would she have to get it along with Diptheria?
