Is it too late to get dd to use a binky?
Hi all, I would love to get dd to use a binky/pacifier, but she never took one at two months (when I first tried to give her) and she never sucked her thumb- we tried her to like that too. I would like to hear from anyone who was successful in getting a toddler to suck their thumb or use a binky. Right now all dd (15 months) uses is my boob and it's getting worn out!
I've had one friend who got her ds to use his finger to soothe himself. Just wondering if anyone else out there has too. How did you get them to like it? Thanks!

While I can totally understand not wanting to be a human pacifier, as a mom with a totally pacifier attached almost yr old I really wish I had never seen the darn thing. It's very difficult to break and is horrible on the teeth. My 9 yo was totally attached, but we were able to take it away at about 2 1/2 - her teeth are coming in so crooked now, she'll have to have braces. I'm having a very difficult time breaking dd2 of her pacifier and I refuse to give one to the baby - but she has no interest in it so I'm safe. It's just my opinion, but I hate pacifiers, I really wish I had never given one to my older girls.

I gave my oldest a noo-noo (as we call them) when she was about 2yo. She used it for about 6 months.
My second born got one at about 10 months and we 'weaned' him from it at about 16 months.
My twins got them, gasp, at 3 or 4 months. They are a year and still use them. This thread is reminding me to think about their noo-noo useage.
Sorry I can't be much more help. They really have come in handy, expecially with the twins.

I can tell you what we decided to do when DD started showing an interest in pacifiers at 24+ months. Pacifiers are used more here in Germany and when we moved here it was hard to keep her from becoming interested because she saw them everywhere.
We let her use one because I couldn’t bring myself to restrict them when all her friends used one, I couldn’t separate my aesthetic bias from the issue and I felt like she would benefit from using one AND, I was happy to add another tool to our comfort to sleep ritual, which has always been a challange because Aya can usually only find comfort in "me" aka my boobs.
After a good discussion here at MDC (still here somewhere) I decided to allow the pacifier only in bed and in the sling when she is going to sleep or resting. This has worked perfectly.
Aya is also perfectly understanding of this “rule”. I’m happy to have a more portable comfort object because when I want to go out at nap or bedtime, I hope DH will find this a useful tool to help Aya (this hasn’t happened yet but I’ll let you know).
Good luck, whatever you decide.

ICM brings up a good point: parameters. COme to think of it, we too put parameters on the older two's usage of the noo-noo. Sleeping and car rides, I think it was.
