New Doctor
I'm not sure if I like our new DR. She is really nice, and explained things to me rather well, but then the discussion turned to shots. I am not sure what I want to do about shots right now. I think I'll do one individual shot at a time. She was discussing what shots they usually give at 6 monthes, and she said they give 2 shots. I asked what they were. She said the names (prevnar and pediatrix) so then I asked her what was in the 2 shots, (what illnesses they were for) and she said the pediatrix is for dtap and polio. She didnt say what the prevnar was for. She kept telling me that they couldn't do the shots today because they didnt have her immunization record, but I could call in and check, and then drop by ANYTIME and get the shots, no need for an appointment, because they LOVE giving shots. WTH? She wants to see her back in three weeks regardless to see if she can get off breathing treatments (shes on 1 every 2 days right now, just got over pneumonia)The whole "We love to give shots" thing doesnt sound too good though. urg. I was hoping this on would be good, esp. since they are on the bus route, and we are currently car-less.

Run away... far away.
And come over to the vaccination board :wink
There's tons of good info there.

I hate how she avoided actually giving me any information about the immunizations too. Its sad to think that some people go in there and are satisfied to know that their child is getting 2 shots, and doesnt want to know any info other than that.

Um, yeah. Run fast & run far...

Jeneca, you can't have it all. Maybe sometimes you can be lucky and find the perfect doctor, but not usually. I would be content with being happy with her otherwise, and just not trust her on that one issue. I would do my own research about vaccinations so I don't need to rely on her info.
I have to find a pediatrician soon, and I am not looking forward to it. I live in a very mainstream area. I know I can travel to Manhattan for a crunchy doc, but that is a long way to go, especially if something urgent comes up at some point.

It took me months to find a pedi I liked, and we still drive an hour and 30 minutes to see him.
We agree on everything but food, as he is a huge soy advocate and really into vegetarianism, and we aren't.
But when he goes into his speil about soy or whatever I just nod and disregard. The important thing is he has never threatened to call DFACs b/c we don't vax (actually more than half of his patients don't vax) he doesn't mock me about the cloth diapers, and he doesn't belittle me.
He loves for me to do my own research and make my own decisions..
But the good ones are few and far inbetween...

Steph Even if I find one here in Staten Island, I would expect to need to leave at least an hour and a half before an appointment, even if I only have to take one bus (the bus line I live on runs every 30 minutes roughly, but has no consistency of schedule so you just go stand there and wait). If they were on the other side of the island, it could take several hours, because I would need to account for possible wait times for each bus. But, if I stick with one on the island I could have the option of asking my FIL to drive us, if he is available at the time.
I am considering that right over the bridge in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn might be quicker for me by bus, so I should consider options there. But, if we got a ride it would cost $9 to cross the bridge. In an emergency, that $9 would seem insignificant.
At this point I plan to search without much limit based on location. If I find several decent options, then I can be picky by location.
I figure the most important thing to me is that the doc will accept my choices, even if he doesn't agree with them. I don't expect to find one that is anti-circ, anti-vax, etc. But, as long as the doc accepts it and doesn't want to reject us as a patient, and as long as the doc has knowledge/experience with babies who are intact and breastfed, then it should be fine. I don't expect to not have to fight every step of the way.
I plan to make clear that I am not going to the doc for parenting opinions, but for medical opinions.
