question about unassisted birth...
i am seriously considering this but one question i have is how does one know when to push. i have this theory that if a woman never actively pushes, her body will do the work slowly and eventually push the baby out with minimal damage to the "bottom" as the hospital staff commonly refers to it:rolleyes:does anyone know about this?

I had an assisted birth, but was never told when to push. My midwife was just "there". Any way, you are right, your body does just do it. It is amazing. I would not say slowly for everyone though. It all happened very fast for me. I just let my body do the work and gave into the flow of it all. And, NO tears or even skid marks. (and my baby was over 10 lbs!) I must say that I think that being in water helped me. With my first I definately felt the "urge" to push and did. Things were much more tense the first time. With my second my midwife said I could push whenever I felt the urge but I never did, I just went with the flow and relaxed, and let my body do the work. (#1 in hospital, #2 at home) In my opinion (and personal experience) I would say your theory is correct. :)
