Amniotic band
Has anybody had this before, and what was the outcome? I did a board search, and didn't find anything. It's quite rare...0.8% of pregnant women will have it. I just want to know that somebody else can lend me some emotional support here.
I have to see a paranatologist to confirm that I do infact have this. Right now it's just a possibilty. Something showed up on my 20 week ultrasound. My baby also has mild dilatation of the renal pelvis...but that's no biggie. I'm just a little worried about the amniotic band.

I've not had it, but I've read about it. The outcomes seem to vary depending on where it is and such.
thinking good thoughts for you!

Hi there,
Yes, my son was affected by amniotic banding. We had no idea until he was born missing most of his left hand. We were totally surprised, but got past it quickly. My son is now 6 1/2 perfect and amazing. As I understand it a loose fiber from your amniotic sac can get wrapped around the baby usually affecting a limb, Many times it only creates an indentation. I know it is scary to hear such news while your pregnant, but try not to worry to much. Please feel free to ask me any questions! I searched and searched for support after my son was born. Not many people had heard of it, but there are some great sites dedicated to children affected by banding etc., if need be. Big Big Hugs to you:Hug !!!!! I'll be thinking good thoughts.

Maineedyou pretty muich summed it up. Sometimes a band can have an impact on the baby and sometimes it doesn't bother the baby at all. What you should know is that it is common for a u/s to pick up a "band" that is not really there. I have had two friends who were told they possibly had an amniotic band and neither did. A more in depth u/s can accurately diagnose it. One of my friends just had some scar tissue from a D&C she had a while before becoming pregnant again, the u/s tech thought it was a band.

My OB did say it's just a *possible* amniotic band, and I will be having a level 3 u/s on Wed. I don't know what a "level 3" u/s entails...all I know is that I want a solid answer!! I just want to know what to expect. I've done some reading up on the issue, and I'm not *paranoid*, just worried. Worried about the worst case scenario...band getting wrapped around my baby's neck. A cleft pallet, missing limb or gidgits....these are things I can deal with! I did read that the bands can break and the baby can be totally unaffected. Of course, this is my hope IF I do infact have an amniotic band. I'm hoping it's just my c-section scar! I can see it on one of the pictures that the u/s tech took of the baby. It looks kind of cool!
I will update when I get the results on Wed.
Maineedyou...thank you for responding!! I really needed to know there was *somebody* else I can talk with this about, in case I need to! I'm glad your kiddo is doing well. I did find a website dedicated to parents whose children have mild to severe deformities from the banding. However, I didn't save it in my favorites!! I'm sure I can find it again. It was at the top of the Google list for "Amnotic Band".
Thank you ladies for responding!!! I needed the boost!

Another thing that can look a lot like amniotic band on a less-detailed scan is something called an intrauterine synechia. It's far more common than amniotic band, too. If you're ever miscarried naturally, or had any surgical procedures involving your uterus like a D&C or vacuum suction termination or even a cesarean section, you can have scarring within the uterus. This can cause a bandlike structure to form in the sac that looks a lot like amniotic bands. It's not though and it is usually not significant at all in terms of the pregnancy or the baby's health.
They found what looked like an amniotic band at a scan I had with DD, and we went through a week of worry thinking it was amniotic band, only to find out it was just a synechia.

Frenchie,
Thinking good thoughts!!!!!! Sounds like there is a really good chance this is just some scarring from your C section! Take care and let me know how things turn out.
