Putting her toys in the trash

My toddler has started taking her toys and putting them in the trash can. She does it especially when she's annoyed about something. She turned one on the 9th, and walks very well, so she is all over the house. Whenever she puts a toy in the trash, I take it out and tell her that "we don't put toys in the trash... if we do then they go bye bye." Obviously this is NOT working. We have our house very babyproofed, so she has free range (though I obviously watch her closely). Can someone help me with some ideas on how to stop this? Or is she just too young to understand?

^_^:
my dd loves to put stuff away- i always find stickpiles of crap stuffed behind dressers, in drawers, etc.
can you put the trash cans in closets or cabinets, and maybe have a few bins for her to sort her toys?

^_^:
:lol I wish she'd put her toys away! We do have a big bin for her toys and she has a drawer in the entertainment center just for her stuff. When she goes down for her nap, I will see if I can clean the storage closet out enough to put the trash can in there.

^_^:
Yes, she is definitely too young yet, but repetition will definite work if you keep saying "This is the trash...icky...toys don't go here"...and make a funny face.
Think about it like this...your toddler is exploring the world and doesn't yet understand that when Mommy says don't put toys in the trash that it means "all the time". LOL!!! What she is thinking is this....maybe when I wear my red shirt, I can throw the toys in the trash....maybe tomorrow, I can throw the toys in the trash...maybe this toy here, or this toy here....(get the picture).
It just takes lots of repetition and maybe moving the trash can for a while. We have a small trashcan under our kitchen sink with a child lock on the cabinet.
Just remember that she is a totally normal toddler and will grow out of this phase.

^_^:
Get a tall trash can with an angled lid and face it in the opposite direction, it makes it a wee bit more difficult to operate.
Next it will be the toilet b/c they can and it's fun...:lol
If your trashcan has a lid, it is probably fun to put things in there. I might would go buy a small lidded trash can and give it to her for her toys.

^_^:
I was going to suggest getting her her own trash can as well! It's one my kids' favorite things to play with (ds went through a major garbage truck driver phase).

^_^:
some ideas before reading the rest of the thread:
Could this have anything to do with being praised for putting stuff in the trash can? After my grandma praised ds for putting stuff in the trash, I was just WAITING for non-trash items to go in!
You said you have a big bin, but I wonder if smaller baskets would help. I can see how it could be fun for a 1yo to "organize" like that. lol.
Put the trash can somewhere unreachable. Maybe you could have a smaller trash can under the kitchen sink?
Telling her that they toys will be gone is likely to have no effect whatsoever. But telling her repeatedly "no, don't put toys in the trash. Let's put them where they belong." will work (at least eventually)

^_^:
moving trashs cans outta reach putting something on top to prevent her from gaining access. Lots of recovery outta trash.. kow its noramal and she will outgrow it.
We think our DD recycled her shoes around a year. :lol I was at my parents home visiting and her shoes disappeared we know she loved to toss things in the recycling bins and they went out that day we checked everywhere... We had to get her nw shoes we think she recycled her old ones. :lol
